Filming resumes on 'Doctor Who' in Cardiff

Filming for Doctor Who's new series has begun in Cardiff.

The BBC has just announced that the seventh revived run of its science fiction classic has resumed production, shooting episodes that will air in the autumn of this year.

The series will see companions Amy and Rory Pond, played by Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill, depart the show midway through the run. Matt Smith, who plays the Eleventh Doctor, said:

It's thrilling and exciting to be back and working with two of my closest friends.

Gillan added: "It's just brilliant to be back on the TARDIS with Matt and Arthur for our craziest adventures yet.”

The statement from the BBC added: "This series will see the last days of the Ponds with Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill returning for their final, roller coaster voyage with the Doctor. Amy and Rory have been at the Doctor's side for more than two series, but what will he do after their heartbreaking departure?"

Additionally, it has been announced that guest stars in the opening episodes include David Bradley, Rupert Graves and Mark Williams from The Fast Show.

Showrunner Steven Moffat has previously hinted of the forthcoming episodes and next year's 50th anniversary: "I'm saying this as a Doctor Who fan myself, and knowing a certain amount about what's coming. For so many reasons I can’t talk about, there will never be a better time to be a Doctor Who fan, I absolutely promise you that."
